Malcolm Gladwell explains Segmentation

    I just ran across an old TED talk from Malcolm Gladwell, author of many books.

    In the talk, he explains (in an entertaining fashion) what segmentation is and why it is important. I enjoyed it, I hope you do too…

      John Salch

      John Salch is vice president of technology and platforms at PROS. He leads the company’s technology organization, as well as teams responsible for its technology partnerships, including Microsoft, SAP, Salesforce.com and IBM. Salch also holds responsibilities for PROS mid-market product line. During his 15-year tenure with PROS, he has worked on the company’s science team, developing forecasting algorithms. Salch has also served in several product development positions, where he developed big data solutions across a wide variety of PROS products and industries. Salch is a proponent of using agile/lean development approaches. He participates in several organizations in the technology community. Salch earned a Ph.D. in statistics from Rice University.

        John – I just came across this video a couple of weeks ago and used it in a college business class that I was teaching in Ukraine. It was a great illustration and the students immediately grasped the concept of segmentation and I was able to build on it from there. Thanks for sharing. I am always interested in picking up tools that help people grasp the concepts of pricing in ways that make sense to non-analytic people such as some of our sales reps.

        One other thing I like about this video is that it shows that segmentation is good for both the producer (provide a more targeted product) and the consumer (getting more satisfaction from the product).
